How to Engineer an Epic Transformation with Adam Sud, Joseph Alexander, Ken Lander, and Josh LaJaunie: PYP 285

I had the great privilege of moderating a panel discussion at Engine 2’s Plant-Stock event, held this year in Black Mountain, NC, over a weekend in August. The topic was, “Transformation and Recovery from Addiction.”

Marching Lifestyle Medicine into the Belly of the Beast with Ted Barnett, MD: PYP 280

Ted Barnett, MD, is also known as “Dr Veggie.” An interventional radiographer by day, Dr Veggie has been a plant-based advocate, educator, activist, and gadfly in Rochester, NY and nationally since the early 1990s.

Ted got his first glimpse of the power of plants in 1991 when he stumbled upon Dean Ornish’s book about reversing heart disease through an extremely low-fat diet. Already sold on the ethical and environmental benefits of eliminating animal consumption, he was doing his due diligence to make sure that a vegan diet wasn’t going to compromise his health and that of his growing family. Hopefully, he thought, it won’t be any worse than a regular diet.

Ornish’s work provided actual proof of the efficacy of a low-fat, mostly plant-based diet to reverse arterial damage, including before and after angiography. As a radiographer, Ted was impressed by the pictures. His family went vegan overnight.

Saving America’s Healthcare System through WellStart Health: PYP 261

This episode is special to me, as I share the next phase of my journey and mission.

I’ve just joined WellStart Health as a co-founder, along with CEO Olivia Kelly, Chief Medical Officer Bojana Jankovic Weatherly, and Chief Brand Ambassador Josh LaJaunie. Our mission is, in Olivia’s words, to “put chronic disease out of business.”

We’re doing this through a potent combo of evidence-based protocols (like, eat more whole plants and less garbage), behavioral science (my title is Chief Behavioral Science Officer), crackerjack technology, and a network of coaches like Josh who have street cred based on their own struggles and journeys.

Cyrus Khambatta, PhD and Robby Barbaro on Thriving with Type 1 Diabetes: PYP 258

Cyrus Khambatta and Robby Barbaro are the co-creators of Mastering Diabetes, an online program and support network for people living with all forms of the disease: type 1, type 2, type 1.5, prediabetes, and gestational diabetes.

And both have been living with type 1 diabetes, also known as insulin-dependent diabetes, for most of their lives. Type 1 can’t be reversed or cured through diet and lifestyle, so they must take synthetic insulin in order to remain alive.

According to mainstream diabetes protocols, Cyrus and Robby should limit their carbohydrate intake significantly, and get the majority of their calories from proteins and fats. Certainly the last thing they should do is live on a high-fruit raw diet.

They not only live on such a diet; they thrive on it. And they’ve taught thousands of others with diabetes to combat the condition with a whole food, plant-based diet.

Transforming the System of Medical Care with David Donohue, MD: PYP 255

David Donohue is a primary care physician in Wilmington, Delaware, and one of only 280 board-certified lifestyle medicine specialists in the United States. As David points out in our conversation, that’s fewer than one for every million Americans.

I wanted to talk with David about the successful and innovative Cure Diabetes program that he’s run over the past year, but we quickly started egging each other on to describe our pet peeves about the current medical system.

“Carbs are Not the Enemy” with Type 1 Diabetic Josh Turner: PYP 249

Josh Turner is one hell of a smart, compassionate, committed human being. A type 1 diabetic who was told that his quality of life, health, and longevity would be compromised by his condition, Josh has adopted a plant-based diet and taken up running.

In the process, he’s lost almost 100 pounds, gained his life back, and become an inspiration and lighthouse for other type 1 diabetics who are struggling to escape the grip of the wrong-headed medical model of disease management through low-carb, high-protein diets.

Becoming a Health Mechanic with Phil Green: PYP 248

Phil Green is a heavy equipment mechanic for the military. Which is to say, he can fix things that people rely on for their lives.

And yet his own body was in a terrible state of disrepair. As a red, white, and blue son of Texas, Phil’s diet was (in his own words) “fried everything.” Except for the barbecued meat.

A baseball player in his younger days, Phil abandoned any pretense of fitness or health when he gave up sports and started a busy career. Eating out all the time expanded his waistline and led to profoundly ill health.
