Good Posture, Healthy Back: Leon Turetsky on PYP 510

The pandemic gave many of us a chance to see ourselves as others see us. Thanks to frequent Zoom meetings, we could see that our posture was kind of sucky.

Forward head, hunched back, turtled shoulders – the tools and activities of our lives have shaped us – misshaped us, you might say – into stressed out, nervous, and submissive animals.

We've been that way for a while, at least as long as the industrial revolution and later the information revolution took us out of fields and meadows and orchards and glens and rivers, and stuck us inside buildings and upon chairs for hours each day.

And the costs are immense.

Not just how we look, or what we unconsciously communicate with our posture and movement.

But also how we feel. And move. And function.

Bad posture can lead to debilitating pain, and restricted range of motion.

It can compress our internal organs and set the stage for disease.

And it's an epidemic.

Today's guest, Leon Turetsky, is a dancer turned Corrective Exercise Specialist and Certified Personal Trainer. After suffering from back problems caused by years of ballroom dancing, Turetsky began experimenting on himself, finding exercises and stretches and props and tools that relieved the pain and restored his natural gait and posture.

After earning advanced degrees, he set out to teach the rest of us what he knows.

His YouTube channel now has over 200k subscribers, with his most popular videos reaching millions of viewers.

And today we met up online to talk about back pain and poor posture, and what we can do about it.
