Neal Barnard, MD, is the president and founder of the Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) – an organization far too large and influential to still be called a “committee,” but who among us hasn't outgrown our childhood name? – and the founder of the Barnard Medical Center in the DC area.
He's also the author of a crazy number of books, including the recent The Cheese Trap – which you should give to all your vegetarian dairy-loving friends just to gross them out and blow their minds.
I've wanted to talk to Dr Barnard since I started Plant Yourself way back in 2014, and last week my wish was fulfilled. (And we even got it on video, just in case you think I stole the audio from Rich Roll and spliced in my questions.)
We talked about his journey, his early research, the formation of PCRM, the evidence for a plant-based diet to prevent and reverse most of our chronic diseases, and using the tragic Hurricane Florence as a teachable moment about climate change and animal agriculture. And about the upcoming Health Kickstart PCRM is sponsoring in the Triangle of North Carolina (my stomping grounds, although to be perfectly honest, I saunter more than I stomp).
We covered:
- his early dislike of medicine
- how his father's generation understood and treated diabetes
- becoming a non-practicing psychiatrist
- research was just “the endless search for a new pill”
- the cruelty and uselessness of animal testing
- starting PCRM
- learning how to do injections on dogs
- the end of animal abuse in US and Canadian medical schools in 2016
- why he prefers adherence over compliance
- why dramatic lifestyle changes are better than little steps
- his diabetes research, and his relationship with the American Diabetes Association
- drug companies are looking for new drugs that you have to take for the rest of your life
- allergists and climate change
- the 2019 International Conference on Nutritional Medicine
- and much more…
