Neal Barnard, MD, on Not Eating, Testing, or Exploiting Animals in Pursuit of Health: PYP 291

Neal Barnard, MD, is the president and founder of the Physician’s Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) – an organization far too large and influential to still be called a “committee,” but who among us hasn’t outgrown our childhood name? – and the founder of the Barnard Medical Center in the DC area.

He’s also the author of a crazy number of books, including the recent The Cheese Trap – which you should give to all your vegetarian dairy-loving friends just to gross them out and blow their minds.

Howard Jacobson on Staying True to My Mission: PYP 281

Yup, that’s me, talking directly to you in this episode.

I wanted to take a break from the guest-interview format because I have a lot on my mind.

Yesterday was my 53 birthday, and would have been my dad’s 100th (he and my mom planned well ;).

Marching Lifestyle Medicine into the Belly of the Beast with Ted Barnett, MD: PYP 280

Ted Barnett, MD, is also known as “Dr Veggie.” An interventional radiographer by day, Dr Veggie has been a plant-based advocate, educator, activist, and gadfly in Rochester, NY and nationally since the early 1990s.

Ted got his first glimpse of the power of plants in 1991 when he stumbled upon Dean Ornish’s book about reversing heart disease through an extremely low-fat diet. Already sold on the ethical and environmental benefits of eliminating animal consumption, he was doing his due diligence to make sure that a vegan diet wasn’t going to compromise his health and that of his growing family. Hopefully, he thought, it won’t be any worse than a regular diet.

Ornish’s work provided actual proof of the efficacy of a low-fat, mostly plant-based diet to reverse arterial damage, including before and after angiography. As a radiographer, Ted was impressed by the pictures. His family went vegan overnight.

Lifestyle Medicine for the Win with Marcy Madrid: PYP 275

Marcy Madrid is Vice President of Planning and Marketing at Midland Memorial Hospital in Midland, Texas. (That’s about halfway between Dallas and El Paso on I-20.)

When Midland decided to embrace plant-based nutrition as a pillar of their disease-treatment protocol, Madrid was brought in to spread the message. Both internally, and to the larger community.

What she didn’t expect was to need that message herself, and soon.

Harnessing the Entrepreneurial Spirit for a Plant-Based World with Matt Tullman: PYP 273

Matt Tullman wants 30% of the US population to go plant-based by the year 2030. And that’s not an idle wish – Matt is doing something (a lot of things, actually) about it.

Matt is a long-time policy wonk, entrepreneur, bio-hacker, and venture capital guy. And he brings all these talents and outlooks to bear on the central problems of our time in history – all of which, he points out, can be solved or significantly improved by the switch to a plant-based diet.

Dirty Little Secrets of the Health Benefits Industry: Pulling Back the Curtain with Eric Krieg: PYP 265

Eric Krieg spent decades in the belly of the beast; the benefits industry beast, that is. Until one day he asked a profoundly inconvenient question: “Am I doing the right thing?”

By way of answer, he left his job as a traditional broker and went rogue, revealing the ethically questionable practices of the benefits industry to the world.

And, putting his career where his mouth is, he formed the anti-brokerage: Risk International, a firm that advises companies on how to navigate the benefits industry, and make decisions in their own best interests. Rather than getting paid on commission, Risk International is fee-for-service; a rare case of financial transparency in the health benefits world.

Saving America’s Healthcare System through WellStart Health: PYP 261

This episode is special to me, as I share the next phase of my journey and mission.

I’ve just joined WellStart Health as a co-founder, along with CEO Olivia Kelly, Chief Medical Officer Bojana Jankovic Weatherly, and Chief Brand Ambassador Josh LaJaunie. Our mission is, in Olivia’s words, to “put chronic disease out of business.”

We’re doing this through a potent combo of evidence-based protocols (like, eat more whole plants and less garbage), behavioral science (my title is Chief Behavioral Science Officer), crackerjack technology, and a network of coaches like Josh who have street cred based on their own struggles and journeys.

Transforming the System of Medical Care with David Donohue, MD: PYP 255

David Donohue is a primary care physician in Wilmington, Delaware, and one of only 280 board-certified lifestyle medicine specialists in the United States. As David points out in our conversation, that’s fewer than one for every million Americans.

I wanted to talk with David about the successful and innovative Cure Diabetes program that he’s run over the past year, but we quickly started egging each other on to describe our pet peeves about the current medical system.
